There are sleeping bags... and there are Sir Joseph-sleeping bags. The new collection for this season is in and with the new Himalayan Looping III 500 and 1200, we knew immediately: this is not standard outdoor gear. This is the kind of gear built for the true adventurer the mountaineer, the polar expeditioner, the alpinist who takes his sleep seriously.
Sir Joseph is not just any brand. The Czech family company has decades of experience in extreme conditions. Their sleeping bags are handmade, filled with the best down and tested in the world's toughest climbing areas.
The Himalaya Looping III 500 - lightweight performance for cold nights
The Himalayan Looping III 500 is the lighter version of the two. When you grab it for the first time, you immediately notice its compactness: thanks to its down filling, it feels light and supple. The sleeping bag is filled with high-quality goose down with a fill power of 800 cuin that means a lot of insulation per gram.
It is designed for use in cold conditions, but not necessarily extreme polar nights. Think mountain treks, bivouacs in the Alps, or winter trekking where weight and pack volume play a big role.
The temperature ratings don't lie: comfortably between -3°C and -10°C , with a limit to around -23°C. This makes the Looping III 500 ideal for adventurers who want to travel light but still seek maximum warmth.
The Himalayan Looping III 1200 - built for the extreme
And then the big brother: the Himalayan Looping III 1200. This sleeping bag is everything the 500 is but on an extreme scale. As soon as you roll it out, you feel the huge amount of down insulation: about 1250 grams of down with the same high fill power. This is a sleeping bag for expeditions, high mountain treks and polar travel spots where the thermometer drops deep below zero.
The comfort range is between -18°C and -26°C, with a limit down to around -54°C. Those are temperatures where most people prefer to sit by a fireplace, but where some still pitch their tents, and it is exactly for that group that this sleeping bag is made.
Despite that extreme insulation, the fit remains smart: a close-fitting mummy model that traps heat without making you feel confined. The inside feels luxuriously soft, while the outer fabric is sturdy and water-repellent.
Why these sleeping bags are so expensive
Those who see the price might wonder: why is a Sir Joseph so much more expensive than other sleeping bags?
The answer is in the details and in the materials.
- Top quality down
Sir Joseph uses only ethically sourced goose down of European origin, with a high fill power (800+ cuin). That means maximum insulation at minimum weight. - Handmade craftsmanship
Each sleeping bag is hand-filled in the Czech Republic to keep the down perfectly distributed. No cold zones, no clumps, just constant warmth. - Light, strong and durable material
The outer fabric is made of Pertex Quantum, fabrics that are extremely light yet robust. They are breathable, windproof and water-repellent - ideal for alpine conditions. - Functional details
Think anatomically shaped hood, draft strips at the zip, a well-insulated foot box and smart compression pockets. Everything is designed for efficient use in the field.
In short: you are not just paying for a sleeping bag, but for a piece of security - the knowledge that you will stay warm even in extreme cold.
500 vs. 1200 - which one will you choose?

For those who want only the ultimate
The Himalayan Looping III series is not for everyone - and that is exactly the point.
These are sleeping bags for people who want to push their limits, who don't let cold, wind or altitude hold them back. For those who see their gear as an investment in safety, comfort and performance.
Because in the mountains or deep into the night, somewhere above the tree line there is one thing that counts: staying warm. And Sir Joseph does that like no other.
