The summer holidays are (almost) over. For many adventurers, this means: the tent goes back in the closet, the sleeping bag is put away and the backpack can take a rest until the next adventure. Especially now, it is important to store your camping gear properly. Proper maintenance extends the lifespan immensely - and prevents disappointment on your next trip.
1. Store your tent clean and dry
A tent can take a lot, but moisture and dirt are disastrous.
-
Make sure it is completely dry before you store it. Even a little moisture can cause mould or unpleasant odours.
-
Brush away sand and dirt, using a damp cloth for stubborn spots if necessary.
-
Store the tent loosely in a larger bag rather than tightly rolled up in its original packaging. This will help keep the coatings intact.
2. Sleeping bag: let it breathe
A sleeping bag is made to keep you warm - but it needs fresh air after use.
-
First, hang the sleeping bag out well after your holiday so that moisture and perspiration disappear.
-
Use a cotton storage bag or a large breathable bag instead of the compression bag. Lying compressed for long periods can affect insulation.
-
Wash only if necessary, following the manufacturer's washing instructions.
3. Sleeping mat: do not roll up too tightly
Whether you have a self-inflating sleeping mat or an air mattress, the same applies here: make sure it lasts a long time.
-
Let the mat dry completely before storing it.
-
Roll or fold it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Rolling it too tightly can damage the foam or seams.
-
Preferably store the mat half-open or with the valve open (for self-inflating mats), so that the foam is not permanently under pressure.
4. Backpack: make it empty and fresh
A backpack has to endure a lot during a holiday.
-
Empty all compartments completely (including that one zip you almost forget about). Crumbs or food leftovers attract pests.
-
Clean the outside with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh detergents.
-
Hang or put the backpack away dry - preferably in a place where it will not be flattened.
Extra tip: check and repair immediately
Check now for cracks, broken zips or missing pegs. By repairing or adding to it immediately, your equipment will be ready to go again for the next adventure.
Conclusion
Storing your camping gear properly is just as important as having fun with it while travelling. With a little attention, your tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and backpack will stay in top condition and you will be on the road again next season without a care in the world.
